Finding YOUR edge
I love my hairstylist!. She has so much style and every time I visit her salon, she has reinvented herself: she has a new hair colour, a new haircut or maybe hair extensions. Her makeup is wild and she dresses so creatively. I admire her for that and I love her innovative spirit.
In my social circle, I have an an acquaintance who puts blue highlights in her hair and wears humongous glasses. I know the she is trying to find her edge but she looks more like a clown than anything else. What’s the difference between these two ppeople? One looks creative and the other looks like a caricature.
How does one go about finding their edge without looking ridiculous?
If you have dressed creatively all your life, this article is not for you; You KNOW what to do and how to do it. However, if you are trying to differentiate yourself and make yourself look unique, here is my advice to you:
Pick ONE unique thing and stick to it. This is YOUR brand.
Don’t try a combo, it’s TOO much.
One thing is not outrageous, it’s just a little bit of spice to your image.
Think of the businessman with yellow runners or the professor with the bowtie. These elements become their trademark.
Wearing sunglasses at all time may have worked for Bono, but it probably won’t work for you.
If you are not sure don’t know what to select here are a few examples:
• colourful socks under a power suit
• a pocket square in your suit
• a unique frame on your glasses
• a flower on your lapel (Think Pierre Elliot Trudeau)
• funky hearings
• a beautiful scarf
• a work “uniform” (think Steve Jobs black turtleneck and jeans)
• a classy hat
• a unique hairstyle
• always wearing an accessory or a piece of clothing in a certain colour
For me, it’s the colour red; I love that colour and try to include a bit of it in my outfits. It gives me confidence and I love the energy of that colour. How about you? Have you found YOUR edge?
