Is it time to update your image?

I have this shirt that I always wear when I go to the hairdresser. It’s comfortable, not too hot, not too cold, not white, and I am not worried to get it stained. Would I wear it to go out for dinner? No! Does it make me look my best? No! But it’s comfortable and I like it. It serves its purpose.

Most of us have garments like these in our closet. However, we must also have clothing that excite us and that make us feel fantastic, successful and dare I say, sexy. When we wear them, we have power and confidence. Ideally, you should love everything in your closet! So, it may be time to do a big purge of your wardrobe. When looking at each garment, ask your self the following questions:

• Does it fit?

• Is worn out?

• Is it out-dated?

• Do I feel wonderful wearing it?

• Does it support me? (It is in my colours? Does it support my style and image? Is it of good quality?)

• Does it need repair or cleaning?

We often get attached to old garments because they remind us of good times when we were happier, thinner, younger. Please, please, please do not do this. You deserve to look great NOW! Wearing beautiful clothes will enhance the way you feel. You will have more confidence and act with more determination when you know that you look your best. You may have looked great in those pink pants in 1984, but those days are gone.

Do not keep anything that do not make you feel and look amazing! Before you go shopping, take time to purge what you already have. I am a proponent of less is more and if you plan correctly, you can create capsules wardrobes. Capsules wardrobes are a small collection of clothing pieces that you wear interchangeably.

On a side note, I used to keep outdated clothes, just in case there would be a “80s party” and I would need to have something to wear… If you also think this way, remove those clothes from the prime real estate of your closet and store them in a box in a storage space. You do not want to look at those 80’s pink pants every morning when you are getting ready for your day! :)

Purging your closet can be a daunting task, but by not doing it, you are sabotaging yourself. If you are stuck in a rut, it’s a sure way to move forward.

As the saying goes, “Life is. not a dress rehearsal”. Step in who you really are NOW. You will not regret it!
